During these times of uncertainty, it’s a perfect opportunity to be reading our Bibles more, growing in the Lord, and growing as families. I’ve heard many people express that they’re seeing the silver lining in having extra family time at home. And I agree! Proof of that came to me through one of my Facebook friends. His family had been sooo busy that the FIRST TIME they’d ever sat at the dinner table as a family was LAST WEEK. He was very thankful for that. My prayer for all of us is that we are using this time wisely. Attached is QUIZ #15 for the New Covenant Lesson. AngelologyI’m sure y’all are excited we concluded our lessons in the covenants. Well done! Now, we will dive into an exciting subject, angels! This section will be called Angelology, just a fancy way of saying the study of angels. And we will look at Angelology in three areas:
Their Existence , Origin, and Nature The word angel, malak in Hebrew and aggelos (angelos) in Greek, means “messenger.” Angels were created some time in eternity past before God created man. The book of Job gives an approximate timeframe of that, “before the earth” (see Job 38:4, 7). The Bible does not give an exact number of how many angels God created. However, the book of Hebrews describes their number as, “myriads” (Heb 12:22; see also Psa 68:17; Dan 7:10; Rev 5:11). Let’s just say, there are A LOT of angels! How many times are angels mentioned in the Bible? Many people, in times past and presently, have not believed in angels. However, Jesus clearly taught that they existed, and He also said they will accompany Him at His second Advent (Matt 24:31; 25:31). The fact that they exist shouldn’t surprise us at all. Why did God create them? To serve Him and carry out His will. Servants! In fact, angels serve in various functions – more on that later. But in general, God created them to serve His purposes in history. The good and the bad We see two types of angels in the Bible – holy ones and fallen ones. All of them were created as immortal and holy servants. The Bible teaches many angels are still holy and will remain holy, even at His second Coming (Mark 8.38; Luke 9.26; Acts 10.22; Rev 14.10). Some are even called His “chosen angels” (1 Tim 5:21). Like humans, they have a will, the power to choose, an intellect, the ability to learn, emotions, etc. Unlike humans, angels are very powerful (Heb 2:7, 9). In fact, a single angel is recorded destroying an army of 185,000 Assyrian soldiers! The Bible teaches that angels have the power of the elements, like wind and fire. Yet, no angel is all powerful like God. Their power is limited. What is cool (and maybe a little scary) is that angels, according to Scripture, are spirit and invisible but they can at times take on a visible, physical, even human form. And from what Scripture describes of all angels, they seem to depict a male gender, and are referred to using masculine language (he, him, his). For example, when angels visited Abraham and Sarah, they sat, walked, ate, and spoke like humans! This is why we should always be kind and courteous to ALL people we meet. Because the book of Hebrews 13:2 reveal that many have entertained angels without knowing it! Interestingly, some angels, usually the ones in heaven, can have a totally different form than humans, sometimes weird looking. Isaiah 6 says some angels have 6 wings. In other places, angels have four faces including man and animal faces. It’s interesting to think that God may have used the angels as a template for creating all the creatures in the animal kingdom. Some angels have many eyes, feet with hooves, wheels below them to move in one direction, human looking hands on their wings, clouds for clothing, rainbows for crowns, and other unusual features. Who's who?Surprisingly, there are only three angels in the Bible that have been revealed by name. The first is Lucifer, better known as Satan. Let’s cover him later. Second, there’s Michael. He is the only angel that is describes as an “arch angel” (Jude 9) and also as “who is to be like God” (Dan 10.13, 21: 12:1; Jude 9; Rev 12.7), the latter description being the actual meaning of his name. He is the angel that protects the land of Israel (Dan 10.21; 12.1). And he is also the one who will lead the armies of angels against Satan during the Great Tribulation (Rev 12:7). Then, there is the angel Gabriel. His name means “Mighty one of God.” Gabriel seems to be God’s special messenger. He interpreted Daniel’s vision and was the angel who announced John the Baptist’s and Christ’s births. An angel’s home is likely heaven. Daniel 6:22 Some angels have very specific functions and duties under God’s direction. For example, cherubim (plural form of cherub) were dispatched to keep Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. Another class of angels called Seraphim, fiery angels, were created solely to direct worship to God. How would you like that job? Angels also have the task of ministering to people. Jesus, for example, was ministered to by angels when he was near His crucifixion (Matt 4:11; Luke 23: 43). Presently, angles protect people. Check out Psalm 34:7, 91:11-12; Matt 18:10; and Hebrews 1:14 to see what I mean. They also help God in answering our prayers. Remember Daniel? He said Michael helped him in his prayers (Dan 10:13). Angels also have the wonderful duty of taking believing souls to heaven (Luke 16:22). Not only that, angels will have a big part in the coming Rapture. They will take believers to see the Lord in the clouds, and the time it will take them is…a blink. I will personally thank the angel who leads me straight to heaven. How about you? As mentioned above, in the future, angels will be involved in the war of the great tribulation, called Armageddon, aiding God as He brings judgement on the world. Youth,Welcome back to our Sunday School lesson on: My Bible-Can I Trust It? We are taking a survey of the entire Bible.[1] What we've covered so far:
Our current section: The books of Prophecy (Isaiah through Malachi) The books of prophecy can be divided into two sections, the major and minor prophets. The major prophets include: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel. The minor prophets (called minor because of their small length, not because they are less important) include: Hosea through Malachi (12 books total). Last week we looked at Isaiah and Jeremiah. Today, let's finish up the major prophets with Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel. [1] References used: Alex Bauman, My Bible: Can I Trust it? Regular Baptist Press Press, 2011, and also Bruce Wilkinson and Kenneth Boa, Talk Thru the Bible (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1980). Lamentations The prophet Jeremiah wrote the book of Lamentations. Because of 40 years of rejection and disobedience from Israel, Jeremiah prophesied the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon in Jeremiah 1:14-16. After the city fell, Jeremiah documented what he saw and experienced in the book of Lamentations. Some have called this book a funeral of a city; full of mourning and lament. Yet in this book of sorrows, Jeremiah recorded the promises of God’s faithfulness to encourage Israel. Since Jeremiah wrote this book after Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem and took captive the Israelites, the book was likely written around 586 BC. We discover 3 themes in this book: 1) One of mourning due to this holocaust. Because of their disobedience, Israel saw and experienced the promised judgement of God. 2) The confession and acknowledgement of a nation’s sin. 3) A message of hope - a covenant keeping God will not only judge, but restore His people as He has promised. Key verses in this book: Lamentations 2:5-6 – “5 The Lord has become like an enemy. He has swallowed up Israel; He has swallowed up all its palaces, He has destroyed its strongholds and multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and moaning. 6 And He has violently treated His tabernacle like a garden booth; He has destroyed His appointed meeting place. The LORD has caused to be forgotten the appointed feast and sabbath in Zion, and He has despised king and priest in the indignation of His anger.” Lamentations 3:22-23 – “22 The Lord’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” This book is a living testimony of how God hates disobedience. Also, of how He loves His people enough to discipline them, as well as fulfill all His promises made to them. Does Jeremiah’s book of Lamentations resemble an account in the life of Christ? EzekielNebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem in three stages, one in 605 BC (Daniel was taken captive), a second time in 597 BC (Ezekiel was taken captive), and a final one in 586 BC (when Jeremiah wrote Lamentations). The total time it took Nebuchadnezzar to completely conquer Jerusalem was close to 20 years. Ezekiel wrote this book that bears his name around 565 BC, approximately 20 years after Jeremiah wrote the book of Lamentations. Both Ezekiel and Daniel were likely the same age, teenagers, when they were taken captive, and both at least 20 years younger than Jeremiah. Ezekiel knew very little of freedom. When he became of age, Ezekiel became a priest and prophet perhaps during the worse times of Israel’s history – a seventy-year period of captivity and enslavement! During that time, Ezekiel used parables, signs, symbols, and was known to dramatize his prophetic messages – for example, digging a hole in the wall and lying on his side for many days (Ez 12:1-7). He also saw many visions, such as the wheel in the middle of the wheel and the valley of the dry bones.  Similar to Jeremiah’s prophecies, Ezekiel’s prophetic themes were one of condemnation and consolation regarding Israel. Ezekiel’s ministry was to the exiled Jews in Babylon. Like Jeremiah, Ezekiel not only reminded Israel of her sin, but also reminded them of God’s faithful promises. It’s sort of like how any father would discipline his children. The discipline is usually not that pleasant, in fact, it hurts! But before, during, and after the discipline, a good father will always remind his children of his undying love and commitment to them. That is what God is doing through the prophet Ezekiel. Key verses in this book: Ezekiel 36:24-26 – “24 For I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands and bring you into your own land. 25 “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.” Ezekiel 36:33-35 – “33 ‘Thus says the Lord God, “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places will be rebuilt. 34 “The desolate land will be cultivated instead of being a desolation in the sight of everyone who passes by. 35 “They will say, ‘This desolate land has become like the garden of Eden; and the waste, desolate and ruined cities are fortified and inhabited.” Because of Ezekiel, we have very detailed descriptions and measurements of the millennial kingdom, a place waiting for both Israel and the church. Daniel The prophet, who wrote this book, was taken captive as a teenager and deported to Babylon, along with three of his Hebrew friends, during Nebuchadnezzar’s invasion of Jerusalem. The first part of Daniel’s book gives historical events of his life, such as his ordeal in the lion’s den. The second part describes prophecies of the future concerning Israel and the Gentiles. Like the prophet Ezekiel, Daniel spent most of his life enslaved. What’s more, Daniel actually served in 3 administrations, under the Babylonians in 605 BC, the Medes, then the Persians in 539 BC – each administration conquering the former. Daniel’s ministry however, unlike Ezekiel’s and Jeremiah’s, was both to Israel and the conquering administrations. During the Persian reign, Israel fell in favor with Cyrus, the Persian king, and let them return to the land of Israel under the leadership of Zerubbabel. Daniel stayed in Babylon. Daniel’s ministry to the conquering nations lasted until he was in his 80s. The book of Daniel is critical in understanding God’s prophetic timetable. Studying this book will give you a strong foundation for studying the book of Revelation. As pastor Andy has said before, Daniel is the basement and Revelation is the ceiling. The prophecies in Daniel’s book are strikingly accurate, some being fulfilled in his own day and many yet to be fulfilled. Like the prophets above, Daniel’s prophecies were to give hope to exiled Israel outside of her land. Also, Daniel predicted the exact time they would suffer under the hand of the Gentiles nations, better known as the Times of the Gentiles. After that, Israel is to enjoy the covenant promises in full during an everlasting Messianic Kingdom. Daniel’s apparent theme in his book is God’s absolute power, direction, and sovereignty over the affairs of humans. Absolutely nothing is outside of God’s knowledge and control. What an encouraging thing to know as we fall in very confusing times such as this corona virus pandemic – He is still in control. In fact, he never lost it in the first place. So why should we? Key verses in this book: Daniel 2:20-22 – “20 Daniel said, “Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, For wisdom and power belong to Him. 21 “It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men and knowledge to men of understanding. 22 “It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.” Daniel 2:44 – “44 In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever.” A very important chapter to know is chapter 9, particularly verses 24-27. “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. 25 “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 “Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. 27 “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.” The above passage is Daniel’s Seventy Weeks Prophecy. It predicts the chronological timeline of Israel’s captivity all the way to the Messianic Kingdom promised to Abraham’s descendants. The Bible affirms that the first 69 weeks have been fulfilled - those 69 weeks started in the time of Daniel and continued all the way to the day Christ presented Himself as the nation’s Messiah, better known as Christ’s Triumphal Entry. The last week is yet to be fulfilled. The last week will happen during the seven-year Tribulation (the seventieth week). The church age, in which we find ourselves in today, is a pause in the timeline. Why the divine pause? So that the church age, an eternal plan of God (Rom 8:28; 2 Tim 1:9; Titus 1:2), might be fulfilled. God desires all men to be saved by the hearing of the gospel, the task of the church, before the last seven years, the Great tribulation, comes upon Israel (Dan 9:24) and the world. Knowledge of this should motivate us to share the gospel even more! The reassuring thing in all this is that the church will not be a part of the 70the week, or the Great Tribulation. The church was not appointed for that. (1 Thess. 5:9). In light of this, may we praise Him and live for His glory more and more each day! This concludes our lessons on the major prophets. Next week, we'll dive into the minor prophets. I pray that through these lessons we all find a deeper love for God and His prophetic word.

QUIZ #14 - The Davidic Covenant Continuing on in the lessons on the covenants, our last stop is the The New Covenant. Like the previous covenants, let’s looks at five areas of the New Covenant 1)Context, 2) Features, 3) Class, (Conditional or Unconditional) 4) Significance, and its 5) Relation to Bible History.  The New Covenant1. Context We find this covenant spoken of back in the Old Testament, in Jeremiah 31:31-34. It says, 31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the LORD, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” God, in his grace, made this covenant after the nation was in mourning over their city, which was destroyed by the Babylonians. It was to not only to show His faithfulness and redemption to Israel, but to offer to fallen humanity as well. 2. Features
ii. “I will be their God, and they shall be My people” (33c), and… iii. “They (Israel) will know Me (God) because I will forgive their iniquity…”(34).  3. Class Because Israel had no actionable part and God made all the promises, this is considered another UNCONDITIONAL promise. This covenant is another amplification of the Abrahamic covenant - the blessing aspect to be specific. To be absolved, forgiven, cleared, or freed of your sins (and never again remembered) is truly a blessing in every sense of the word! (see Psalm 32:1) 1. Significance The New Covenant is both significant and unique for several reasons.
1. Relation to Bible History How does this relate to Bible History? Fortunately, Jews and Gentiles today who believe on Jesus Christ enjoy the spiritual blessings of the new covenant. However, in the original promise to Israel back in Jeremiah 31:31-34, God promised to write His law within and on their hearts. In Ezekiel 36:26-27, another New Covenant reference, God promised, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” When we observe the nation of Israel today, unfortunately, we don’t see this verse being fulfilled. Israel is in a state of unbelief. In fact, many Jews today aggressively reject Jesus; even disowning family members who believe in Jesus. This is concrete evidence that the new covenant is not fulfilled in its entirety.  So, when will it be fulfilled? Like all the other conditional covenants, the New covenant will be fulfilled in its entirety during the thousand-year reign of Christ. Israel will enjoy in full all that God has promised them. Sunday School - Major Prophets Welcome back to our Sunday School lesson on My Bible: Can I Trust It?[1] So far, we covered The Books of the Law (Genesis through Deuteronomy), The books of History (Joshua through Esther), The books of Poetry (Job through Song of Solomon). Now we enter the section called the books of Prophecy, which covers Isaiah to Malachi. The books of prophecy can be divided into two sections, the major and minor prophets. The major prophets include Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel. The minor prophets include Hosea through Malachi In this lesson we’ll do a brief survey of Isaiah and Jeremiah. Isaiah Isaiah is often called “the prophet of the Messiah” since he had more to say about the Messiah than any other prophet did. Also, he is called the evangelical prophet, because of chapter 53, which is the clearest presentation of the gospel in the Old Testament. With 66 chapters, Isaiah has more chapters than any Old Testament book except Psalms. The book of Isaiah can be nicely divided into 2 parts and also shares a two-fold message: 1) condemnation (chapters 1-39) and consolation (chapters 40-66). In the first part, Isaiah magnifies the sin of Judah and pronounces God’s judgment on them. In the second part, Isaiah then consoles Judah with a message of future salvation, rescue, and restoration. A basic theme of Isaiah is that “salvation” is in the Lord. In fact, the word “salvation” appears more in Isaiah (26 times) than any other book of prophecy. A familiar key verse in Isaiah is 9:6-7: “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.” BIG Challenge: Using a Bible concordance, find and read each of the 27 references of salvation in the book of Isaiah. Then answer this question: Which descriptors stand out to you regarding God's salvation? For example: God's salvation is forever (Is 51:6).  Jeremiah Jeremiah is known as “the weeping prophet” because he wept for his fellow Israelites. He also gave more information on Israel than any other prophet. He received his call from God when he was a youth (1:6) and proclaimed that the Jews should surrender to Babylon. Because of his message of condemnation, Jeremiah was one of Judah’s most unpopular prophets. In fact, the Jewish leaders made several attempts to take his life; they threw him into a cistern, put him in stocks, and later imprisoned him. Nevertheless, Jeremiah remained true to God in spite of all his sufferings. Also, Jeremiah lived to see his people taken captive by the Babylonians. In the book of Jeremiah, God is portrayed as patient and holy. God had delayed his judgement on Judah and His warning was clear: Judah’s time of repentance would soon expire. What a couple weeks this has turned out to be!! We hope you all are doing well, staying healthy, praying for one another, and trusting that God is in control of this situation. Like all things in due time, this too shall pass. In order to decrease the risk to our congregation, SLBC has opted to postpone our Wednesday and Sunday services until further notice. Instead of physical services, Pastor Andy will continue his Wednesday teaching on 2 Peter via livestream tonight at slbc.org (7pm). You won’t want to miss that! You may find yourself homeschooling for the first time ever, which may feel daunting and overwhelming. We understand and certainly share that sentiment some days! This is no easy task! As we continue to trust God through each hour, day and week, we look to passages such as Deuteronomy 6:5-9; 11:18-21; Proverbs 1:7-9; 4:1-2; 22:6. We’ve come to realize that beyond the overwhelm, homeschooling can be an enjoyable journey and that God can provide all the resources we need when we feel overwhelmed, whether it’s emotional strength, logistics, wisdom, or hope! We also realize that God has designed the family unit to flourish together and He has given parents the mantle of authority to teach their children (Eph 6:1). I pray that through this time our family units would be strengthened, and that love, unity, and respect would abound in our households. Please know that we are praying for all our youth families that must tackle this homeschooling challenge head on; you are not alone. Remember that your youth probably feel overwhelmed also, not just with the current situation, but with school in general even when things are “normal.” As you walk through these uncharted waters, God is giving you an opportunity to model trusting God for provision and strength during uncertain times. Family Study Opportunity In lieu of our Wednesday night class, here is a continuation of what we have been studying. I pray it can be a springboard for a great family discussion during this intermission. So far in our study of the covenants we have covered the Noahic Covenant, Abrahamic Covenant, Mosaic Covenant, and the Land Covenant. Next up is the Davidic Covenant. Each time we look at a covenant, we look at five areas: 1) Context, 2) Features, 3) Class, (Conditional or Unconditional) 4) Significance, and its 5) Relation to Bible History.  Let’s look at each of these areas as it pertains to the Davidic Covenant. 1. Context – The Davidic covenant was a covenant made between King David and God in 2 Samuel chapter 7. At that time, Israel was prospering under King David. While enjoying this time of peace and prosperity, David said, “I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains” (2 Sam 1:2). In other words, David planned to build God a new dwelling place, something better. Even the prophet Nathan encouraged David to build a new house for the Lord. But God had something else in store. God came to Nathan and told him to tell David that God, instead, will build a house for David (2 Sam 1:11). More specifically, God promised to establish David’s line (2 Sam 1:9-10), David’s kingdom and throne forever (2 Sam 1:12-17). 2. Features – The features of God’s covenant with David can be found in 2 Samuel 7. God promised these things…
4. Significance –The Davidic covenant proves to be an amplification of God’s overarching covenant with Abraham, in which God promised land, seed, and blessing. In David’s covenant, God promised an everlasting kingdom and throne. But who can possibly reign in this eternal kingdom? You guessed it, Jesus Christ! In fact, the prophet Daniel predicted this eternal King and reign of Christ (Dan 7:14). Jesus is both the Son of God and Son of David and is the rightful heir to that eternal throne. 5. Relation to Bible History – As you may have already noticed, some important facets of this promise, like an eternal reign and kingdom, have not yet been fulfilled. When will that happen? You guessed it again, during the millennial kingdom. The Davidic Covenant is Bible history yet to be seen! That said, The Davidic covenant becomes a very important covenant in that it makes certain and assures us that God’s kingdom will come to earth someday, just as Jesus taught the disciples to pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt6 6:10). Something cool will also happen during this 1000 year reign of Christ on earth – we will see David!
